A group of current and former Republican officials have called on Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) to start fooling around with actual women, instead of the phone sex and “sexting” that Weiner acknowledged after a week of denials.
Since Weiner admitted to the scandal he’s been plagued by calls from Republicans and some Democrats to resign from office, which he refused. This new round of criticism was initiated by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), who in 2007 admitted to enjoying the services of prostitutes. Vitter remained in the Senate and won re-election in 2010.
In an appearance Friday on ABC’s Good Morning America, Vitter said not one Republican called on him to resign because his replacement would’ve been a Democrat, appointed by Louisiana’s Democratic governor at the time.
“It wasn’t just political expediency that let me stay in the Senate, it was the fact that I slept with real women like a man should. There was none of this phone sex or ‘sexting’ as the kids call it,” Vitter said. “It was good, old-fashioned whoring around and paying for it. Just because I support abstinence-only sex education doesn’t mean I have to follow it.”
Vitter said Wiener also made a mistake by not having his wife stand by him when he admitted to the scandal. Vitter noted that “nothing builds sympathy for you like making your wife’s embarrassment even worse.”
Former Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.), reached by phone, said Weiner should’ve looked to his own staffers for sexual release and could’ve done a better job of covering up the scandal by getting his party’s leaders involved in trying to keep it secret, the way Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) did with him.
“Why would you waste your time on the phone when you can coerce a staff member to sleep with you instead, especially when she’s your friend’s wife? I don’t know if Congressman Weiner’s parents are still around, but if they are they should’ve coughed up some hush money.” Ensign said. “If that doesn’t work, he could always resign before the ethics committee throws the book at him. At least he’d still earn a taxpayer-funded salary for a while.”
Former Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), approached for comment outside an airport restroom, said Weiner should be allowed to remain in office just like he was. Craig declined to elaborate and said he was late for “an appointment” in the men’s room.
Ex-House Speaker and current presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said the only way Wiener could remain in office would be if he attacked someone else for having an affair while he was fooling around at the same time–just like the way Gingrich was cheating on his second wife while leading the impeachment of President Bill Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
“As someone who cheated on two wives and is on my third, I can say the American people are very forgiving but they’re just not that technologically savvy. That’s where Weiner got into trouble. An affair that’s not really an affair? That’s just weird,” Gingrich said. “Now if Weiner manages to dump his wife while she’s in the hospital and run off with a staffer, well that would be entirely different.”
Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford could not be reached for comment as he was hiking the Appalachian Trail.
