Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was arrested Thursday night by Washington, DC police and charged with solicitation of a prostitute.
Police said they responded to a disturbance call at a local hotel and discovered Gingrich engaged in sexual acts with a woman dressed as a female Uncle Sam.
“It’s because I love this country so much that caused me to do this,” Gingrich said in an appearance Friday morning on Fox news. “She was wearing this stars and stripes costume and it really gave my sense of patriotism a rise, if you know what I mean.”
Gingrich, who cheated on two former wives and is currently on his third marriage, previously tried to deflect questions of his infidelities by asserting it was driven by how passionately he felt about this country–along with female staffers and an occasional booty call.
While not actually admitting to the charges against him, Gingrich blamed his arrest on President Barak Obama and the attack on Libya. On March 7 Gingrich called for an immediate unilateral attack on Libya. Then on March 23, after the attacks began, Gingrich said the U.S. shouldn’t have intervened. Since then, Gingrich has tried to explain his constantly shifting positions through a series of confusing and contradictory statements.
“It’s really President Obama’s fault for making me look foolish. The minute he attacked Libya, then he and I were on the same page and as a Republican I just can’t let that happen,” Gingrich said. “Could you imagine me trying to get the Republican nomination for president while trying to explain to the tea party why Obama and I have the same views on something?”
Gingrich noted that he previously supported legislation to address climate change, but reversed his position on this as well. In 2008 he supported health insurance mandates but in 2010 said they were unconstitutional.
In order to distract people from his many flip-flops and his recent arrest, Gingrich said he might have to show just how passionate and patriotic he is by “trading up” from his current wife before the presidential primary season begins.
“Don’t get me wrong, I know that family is the cornerstone of America. That’s why I’m a family values Republican,” Gingrich said. “Now, if I want to upgrade my wife every few years to a younger model that’s my right. I’ve got my eye on a staffer right now and if she passes the test ride, I’ll have a new wife and America will get a smokin’ hot First Lady come 2012.”
